Case Study: Building an Automatically Updating YouTube Video Library

A business feature built directly into our application, without adding a third-party CMS plugin.

Our integration uses the official YouTube Data API to discover public channel uploads. API credentials stay server-side. A six-hour, request-driven cache refresh keeps the library current without manual video entry or a deployment for each upload.

A responsive gallery at /videos and the three latest videos on the homepage share the same feed. An empty channel has a professional introduction; failed refreshes retain the last successful cached results where available.

Automated tests cover public-video filtering, empty-channel handling, cache refresh, fallback behavior and responsive presentation. This is an integration capability demonstrated in code, not a measured cost-saving or speed benchmark against another platform.

The integration reached our production Cloudflare hosting, where testing exposed a runtime incompatibility with a fetch redirect setting. We corrected the request to use manual redirect handling, explicitly rejected redirects and added regression coverage. Successful live synchronization after that correction is not yet independently verified.

Another working application feature

This comparison experience is custom software too.

A responsive selector, synchronized verdicts and accessible scrolling comparisons—built into this application around a business need.

One maintained data source powers eight server-rendered pages. Change platforms without a reload, explore the evidence, and keep column headers visible while scrolling. The same engineering approach can support scoped customer workflows, API-connected features and useful business tools.

Proprietary technology with operating history

Established Spur Machines. A new centralized Spur Fleet.

Our research and content-production experience precedes the centralized platform now being built around it.

Spur Machines · Existing operating history

Western Software has already operated AI-powered research and content production systems across multiple business websites. Spur Machines are an existing part of our engineering history, with experience developing business knowledge around customer questions.

Spur Fleet · Centralized consolidation

We are consolidating that existing Spur Machine technology into Spur Fleet, our proprietary central platform for managing research, knowledge production and review across websites. The new centralized workflow is built and locally tested; its hosted production rollout is being prepared separately.

Three managed website packages

Choose the foundation for your engineered advantage.

Start with the website and management scope your business needs. Add knowledge services and integrations through the appropriate package and agreed rollout.

Package prices and inclusions follow our managed website offer. Custom software and major integrations remain separately scoped. Search visibility and customer acquisition are goals to measure; rankings, traffic and AI citations are not guaranteed.

Compare what your business needs.

Start with custom features, integrations, research and discovery. Compare the engineering service and business workflow, then review the technical trade-offs. Features depend on scope, plan and implementation.

Quick Verdict

Three key differences when comparing Western Software with Squarespace. Labels apply only to the named capability.

WSD advantage

Managed engineering vs self-service subscription

WSD offers website development and managed operations within an agreed scope. A self-service Squarespace editor subscription is a platform purchase; custom engineering can also be hired for it. This advantage concerns the purchased service relationship, not exclusive platform capability.

Custom features, scoped to the business

WSD demonstrates AI-assisted application engineering. Other platforms can use custom developers and AI tools too; delivery speed depends on the agreed feature and review work.

We use AI-assisted engineering for rapid iteration on scoped custom features. This site's API library and interactive comparisons demonstrate delivered application changes. Delivery time depends on scope; no measured competitor speed comparison is claimed.

Editor and styling tools cover common needs; custom code is possible, with platform and support limitations.

Direct API integrations
Depends on needs
Integration-dependent

Check the required API, permissions, plan and maintenance scope before selecting a platform.

Server-side YouTube API integration is implemented here. PostgreSQL, Supabase and Deno Edge Functions are repository-confirmed; additional integrations are separately scoped.

Available platform APIs or external services can support integrations. Confirm the specific feature and plan before assuming arbitrary backend behavior.

Existing Machines; centralized rollout pending

Established Spur Machine research and content production is being brought into the new central Fleet. This Pending label applies specifically to that central platform's hosted rollout.

Western Software has operated proprietary Spur Machines for AI-powered research and content production across multiple business websites. That existing technology is now being consolidated into Spur Fleet; the new centralized hosted rollout is being prepared separately.

AI or workflow services can augment the website. Bespoke research, validation and review are additional engineering or service work.

Fleet rollout pending
Centralized research and QA rollout pending

Spur Machine research/content production has an existing operating history. The new centralized Fleet research and independent-QA workflow has separate activation requirements; its hosted rollout remains pending.

Our existing Spur Machine operating history covers AI research and content production. The centralized Fleet engine adds source research, AI writing and independent factual/editorial QA before private review; that new hosted workflow is still being prepared.

Native content publishing suits many businesses. Source evaluation and independent factual QA are not established merely by having a blog.

Organic Search discovery specialization
Comparable
SEO foundations

Both approaches support public content and search-related configuration. This is capability parity, not a ranking or traffic comparison.

Our managed website work emphasizes clear business information, server-rendered content, metadata, canonicals, internal links and a sitemap. The Academy explains our research-led approach. Search results require useful content and measurement; rankings are not guaranteed.

Built-in search-related formatting and SEO settings support discovery. Content quality and setup still affect outcomes.

AI Search discovery specialization
Depends on needs
Eligibility, not citations

Helpful, accessible content matters across platforms. Neither architecture nor AI tooling guarantees answer inclusion.

We specialize in organizing clear, crawlable, source-supported business knowledge for AI-assisted discovery, following Google's published guidance. This is an engineering and content approach, not a guarantee of AI mentions or citations.

Useful public content and search eligibility matter. Visual design quality does not itself establish AI answer inclusion.

Direct application features rather than a CMS plugin layer. React libraries, hosting and external services remain real dependencies.

Squarespace advantage

Native tools reduce assembly work; extensions, embedded services and custom scripts can add dependencies.

Website architecture
Depends on needs
Different operating models

Choose a managed application or a publishing/editor platform around your workflow. The architecture alone does not establish a winner.

Custom React and TypeScript application with server-rendered public pages, Tailwind CSS and purpose-built components.

Hosted website platform with integrated visual design and content management.

Performance and page speed
Not verified
No measured speed comparison

No matched real-page benchmarks are available. Implementation, content and hosting determine speed.

Control over rendering, assets and caching enables targeted optimization. Actual speed needs measurement; custom code is not automatically faster.

Hosted delivery simplifies infrastructure decisions. Media and third-party scripts still influence speed; assess the real website.

Security and maintenance
Not verified
No security ranking

Different maintenance responsibilities do not prove stronger security. Both need access controls and responsible updates.

Server-side secrets, controlled access and tested changes are demonstrated here. Application dependencies and hosting still need ongoing security work.

The platform manages its hosting. Account access and custom code or external service security remain separate responsibilities.

Scalability
Not verified
Capacity needs validation

No equivalent workload tests establish a winner. Assess content volume, service limits and operating costs.

Application architecture can evolve around workload and data needs. Capacity, provider limits and operating costs must be validated for each project.

Hosted operations remove server management; specialized workloads still need evaluation against platform capabilities.

Ongoing technical maintenance
Depends on needs
Different maintenance responsibilities

Hosted platforms and managed custom applications both need ongoing care. Compare the actual support scope and connected services.

Managed operations follow the purchased package. Custom software needs testing, dependency updates and integration maintenance; it is not maintenance-free.

Platform maintenance is centralized. Owners maintain content, access, extensions and any unsupported custom code.

Website portability and ownership
Depends on needs
Content export is not full portability

Squarespace exports selected content, not the complete design and feature set. WSD source access and a working-service migration still need contractual planning.

Official documentation →

Code is version-controlled, not locked to a theme editor. Source access, IP ownership and handover are contractual; moving hosting or data requires planning.

Selected content can be exported as XML. Design, custom CSS and some content types are excluded; a complete migration needs additional work.

When Squarespace fits—and what to check

Squarespace is a hosted website platform built around visual design and content editing. It suits businesses that want polished presentation without managing application infrastructure. A custom managed website is a different purchase: engineering around how the business works, beyond the available editor and extensions.

Genuine strengths

Integrated design and content tools reduce the number of separate systems an owner has to assemble for a brand-focused website.

Trade-offs to plan for

Custom code is an advanced modification outside normal platform support. Content export covers selected content, not the entire design and working feature set.

Squarespace can be a practical fit for a portfolio or straightforward business presence. Consider custom engineering when customer portals, data flows or specialized interactions become central to the website.

Questions before you choose

  • Are design and content editing the main requirements?
  • Which integrations have a supported extension or API?
  • What content and functionality would need rebuilding if you move?
